Key takeaways
- Check the mover's GSTIN yourself on the government GST portal and make sure the legal name matches the company you are talking to
- Visit the office, or at least video-call it, before paying anything
- Get everything in writing: goods list, price, every extra, insurance, GST and the delivery date
- Never pay the full amount before your goods are delivered, and avoid paying into a personal account
- If a mover holds your goods for extra money, call 112, register a complaint on the National Consumer Helpline (1915) and keep every message and receipt
Every year we meet families who booked the cheapest mover they found online, and then watched the price double on moving day, or saw their goods held on the highway until they paid more. Many of them were careful people. They simply did not know what to check.
The good news is that fake packers and movers are easy to spot, and verified packers and movers in Patna are easy to find, once you know where to look. None of the checks below needs any special knowledge, and together they take less than an hour. We recommend them whether you book Bharat Packers and Movers or anyone else, because a registered, genuine mover will pass all seven without hesitation.
How the common moving scam works
It usually follows the same pattern, which is why it is so easy to avoid once you recognise it.
- An attractive online listing. A website or ad uses a name that sounds like a well-known company, often with "IBA approved" or "govt approved" in large letters, and a price far below everyone else.
- A quick phone quote. No survey, no visit, just a number said over the phone and a request for an advance on UPI.
- Loading day. A hired crew arrives in a truck that does not match the company name. Packing is rushed and nobody gives you a goods list.
- The squeeze. Somewhere between your door and the new city, you get a call: extra charges for "weight", "toll", "labour" or "storage". The goods stay locked in the truck, or in a godown you have never seen, until you pay.
Each of the seven checks below breaks one link in this chain.
1. Verify the GSTIN yourself
A registered company prints its GST number on the quote and the invoice. Do not just look at it. Here is how to check a mover's GSTIN in two minutes:
- Open the official GST portal (services.gst.gov.in) and go to Search Taxpayer, then Search by GSTIN/UIN.
- Enter the 15-character GSTIN and the captcha.
- Check three things: the status is Active, the legal or trade name matches the company you are talking to, and the principal place of business is a real address in or near Patna.
A GSTIN that belongs to a different business, or one that shows as cancelled, is a red flag. Ours is 10DKXPS8855R1ZR, and you are welcome to check it before you call us.
2. Visit or video-call the office
A genuine mover has a real office where you can walk in, meet people and see the trucks come and go. Fake operators usually have only a mobile number, a website and a name that changes slightly between the ad, the call and the receipt.
If you cannot visit, ask for a video call from the office. It takes two minutes and tells you a lot. Our office has been at Shop No. G-4, Ground Floor, Old Jakkanpur, Fraser Road Area, Patna, Bihar 800001 since 1994.
3. Insist on a written quote
Verbal promises are where almost every dispute begins. A proper quote, on paper or as a document on WhatsApp, lists:
- The goods it is based on, from a survey
- Packing material and labour, loading and unloading
- The vehicle and whether it is a dedicated truck or part load
- Floor charges, crating, vehicle transport or storage as separate lines
- Transit insurance cover and premium
- GST and the company's GSTIN
- The delivery date and payment terms
If a mover will not write it down, do not book. If the price was given without any survey, at home or on video, expect it to change.
4. Never pay the full amount in advance
A small booking amount is normal, and so is a part payment at loading. Paying everything before your goods are delivered removes the only leverage you have. The payment terms should be written on the quote.
Two more habits that protect you:
- Pay the company, not a person. A payment to a personal UPI ID that does not match the company name is a warning sign.
- Get a receipt for every payment, with the company name, amount and date.
5. Read recent reviews on Google
Look for reviews with real names, routes and details, spread over months and years. "Shifted from Boring Road to Kankarbagh, TV was crated, one carton label was wrong but they sorted it" reads like a real customer. A burst of short five-star reviews posted within a few days of each other does not.
Also read the one-star and two-star reviews, and how the company replied. A genuine mover answers complaints in public. We are rated 4.9 from 390 Google reviews, and we reply to every one.
6. Ask who will actually do the work
Genuine packers and movers use their own trained crew and their own or regularly contracted covered vehicles. Fake operators take your booking and pass it to whoever is cheapest on the day, which is how a quote from one company turns into a truck from another.
Ask directly: "Is the crew your own staff? Will the truck carry your company name? Who is my coordinator, and what is their number?" Clear answers are a good sign. Vague ones are not.
7. Ask about transit insurance and tracking
A registered company can offer transit insurance against damage, breakage, mishandling and theft in transit, and a way to know where your goods are. At Bharat Packers and Movers, a tracking ID is sent on WhatsApp at booking and you can check the status on our Track Shipment page. If the answer to "how will I know where my goods are?" is "just call the driver", your goods are on their own.
Red flags that should stop you immediately
| What you notice | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| A price far below every other quote | The missing money usually comes back as "extra charges" on the road |
| No GSTIN, or one that belongs to another business | Nobody is legally responsible for your goods |
| A quote without any survey | The price will "change" once the crew sees your home |
| Pressure to pay the full amount before loading | You lose your only leverage |
| Only a mobile number, no address | There is nowhere to go if something goes wrong |
| No goods list or bilty at loading | You cannot prove what was handed over |
| The company name changes between the ad, the call and the receipt | You are dealing with a broker, not the mover |
"IBA approved" and "govt approved": what they really mean
These phrases are used a lot in ads for packers and movers in Patna, so it helps to know what they mean.
- IBA approved refers to bills and quotations that banks and PSUs accept for relocation reimbursement under Indian Banks' Association norms. A mover that offers IBA approved bills should be able to explain the paperwork clearly and give a GST invoice with it.
- Govt approved is not a licence. There is no single government approval for household movers. What you can check is that the business is registered for GST, that the GSTIN is active, and that it issues a proper tax invoice.
Packers and movers fraud: what to do if a mover holds your goods
Stay calm, stay polite and do not pay under pressure without a receipt. Then:
- Keep every record: the ad, the quote, chat messages, call logs, payment receipts and the truck number if you have it.
- Call 112, the national emergency number, and report that your goods are being held. You can also go to the nearest police station with your documents.
- Register a complaint with the National Consumer Helpline by calling 1915 or through its website and app.
- For a formal claim, a packers and movers complaint can be filed online through the e-Daakhil portal of the consumer commissions.
This is exactly why the written quote and the GSTIN matter: they identify who is responsible and what was agreed.
A two-minute checklist before you pay
- GSTIN checked on the GST portal, status Active, name matches
- Office visited or video-called
- Survey done, at home or on video
- Written quote with every extra, GST and the delivery date
- Payment terms agreed, only a small advance paid, receipt received
- Coordinator's name and number saved
- Goods list and bilty to be given at loading
Frequently asked questions
How can I check if packers and movers are genuine?
Verify the GSTIN on the GST portal, visit or video-call the office, read recent Google reviews, get a written quote after a survey and never pay the full amount before delivery.
Are cheap packers and movers always fake?
No, but a price far below everyone else usually means something is missing, such as packing material, trained staff or insurance, and the difference is often demanded on moving day.
Is there a government list of approved packers and movers?
There is no single government approval for household movers. Check that the company is GST registered with an active GSTIN, has a real office and gives a GST invoice. Bank and PSU employees can also ask for IBA approved bills for reimbursement.
Do genuine movers give a GST invoice?
Yes. A registered company gives a GST invoice with its GSTIN for every move.
What should I do if the mover asks for more money on the way?
Do not pay under pressure. Refer to your written quote, call your coordinator, and if the goods are being held, call 112 and register a complaint with the National Consumer Helpline on 1915.
Where can I file a complaint against packers and movers?
Call 112 if your goods are being held, register a complaint with the National Consumer Helpline on 1915, and for a formal claim file a consumer complaint on the e-Daakhil portal. Keep the quote, payment receipts and chats as proof.
